Shopping Centre Skanssi won Vuoden Kaupanteko award
Skanssi was recognized for its responsibility — Shopping Centre Skanssi won Vuoden Kaupanteko award
October 23, 2019
Turku Chamber of Commerce has rewarded Shopping Centre Skanssi with this year’s Vuoden kaupanteko -award. The winner was announced at Chamber of Commerce’s “Kaupan Aika” seminar on Wednesday 23 October 2019.
Vuoden kaupanteko award was given to Shopping Centre Skanssi. The jury made its decision based on Skanssi’s environmental approach to everyday life since its construction – it is the only shopping centre in Finland that has all three LEED environmental certifications. Skanssi was the first shopping centre in Europe to receive not just a platinum-LEED but also a construction-phase LEED certificate.
“This year the prize was awarded for the first time, and the most important criterium was responsibility. Going through the candidates, we noticed that many businesses in commercial section have plenty of responsible policies and ways of acting, but they do not communicate those actions outward. Shopping Centre Skanssi has not only operated responsibly but has also systemically communicated it to the crowd. My message to all businesses is that when you do something good, remember to tell others too." says Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Kesko’s District Director of South-western Finland Olli Setänen.
Skanssi’s Shopping Centre Director Maarit Hurme is very pleased about the award. Responsibility and sustainability play big roles in Skanssi.
“We are very flattered by this award for persistent work in Skanssi. Responsibility has guided the operations already for 10 years since Skanssi was opened in 2009. Environmental impacts have been considered and minimized during construction and work has continued since. We have improved Skanssi for example with new technology.” says Hurme.
Skanssi was the first shopping centre in Finland to start using solar energy. Solar panels are placed in Skanssi’s roof and produce energy for the neon signs in Skanssi’s facade. Skanssi has also the largest geoenergy solution for a shopping centre in Europe.
Responsibility has also expanded even more to social side during last years.
“We have developed accessible services for families and partnerships in unique shopping centre environment”, Hurme continues.
Vuoden kaupanteko prize was awarded first time this year.
