YSTÄVÄNPÄIVÄ SPECIAL - Last Christmas, we asked our staff ideas for Christmas charity donation. This time we selected to go with Kympin Lapset, HYKS Children's Cancer Patients Parents and Friends Association. This non-profit organization's mission is to support the well-being of little cancer patients and their families. Kympin Lapset was proposed by Mira Filatkin from our Property Management team. Read Mira’s story and learn more about Kympin Lapset and their important work.
Mira, why Kympin Lapset? "My older daughter was diagnosed with leukemia ten years ago. Kympin Lapset association was a great support and comfort during those times. Now luckily my daughter has won the battle with cancer and is healthy and well. I joined the board of Kympin Lapset as I wanted to give back the help and support, I had received."
Tell a bit about Kympin Lapset "Kympin Lapset was established 1982 and the aim of the association is to improve the care conditions of children with cancer and to support the rehabilitation. Every year, approximately 150 children get diagnosed with cancer. 20% of them won’t survive. Kympin Lapset also helps the families who have lost a child. Kympin Lapset works entirely on a voluntary basis and has approximately 1 800 members at the moment.
During a chemotherapy period a child is in infection control, meaning they can’t go any public places such as concerts, theaters, public transport, shops… Kympin Lapset organize, for example, private shows or private visits to shops for them. The association also owns a camping center in Kuortti, where holiday weekends and camps are organized for the families. These events and get-togethers are important as they help children and their families to get outside of their homes and get peer support from those going through similar situation."
Do you have any message to companies and individuals: why donations matter? "Kympin Lapset is a non-profit organization working mainly on a volunteer-basis. There’s only one permanent employee plus the staff at Kuortti. Donations are crucial for the association and as there isn’t much administration costs, all the money can be used solely to benefit the kids and families.
All the board members like myself have or have had own child suffer from the cancer, therefore, we are the best experts to know what is the best for the families during and after the child’s treatment period. Specially for the individuals I would like to point out that if you are not able to donate money you can always donate your time. And companies are warmly welcome also to donate goods which are not used."
Thank you, Mira, for sharing your story!
